About me

You can find my CV here. (updated 28.06.2023)

Academic career

I received my Master’s degree at the University of Helsinki in 2004. I had theoretical philosophy and mathematics as double majors and only in the final year decided to focus more on philosophy.

In 2009 I defended my Ph.D. thesis “Truth, Proof and Gödelian Arguments: a Defence of Tarskian Truth in Mathematics”, supervised by Professor Gabriel Sandu.

Since 2010 I have worked mostly at the University of Helsinki, but I’ve also been a visiting researcher at the University of Bucharest, the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (LMU München) and University of California, Irvine. I spent the spring of 2018 visiting the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation at the University of Amsterdam, working in Jakub Szymanik’s research group.

I received the title of docent (equivalent to habilitation) in theoretical philosophy at the University of Helsinki in 2017.

Currently I am working as a Guest Professor, caretaker of the Chair for Theory of Science and Technology (Prof. Gabriele Gramelsberger) RWTH University in Aachen, Germany.

Teaching

I am a qualified subject teacher in philosophy and mathematics, receiving my degree at the University of Helsinki in 2017.

I have taught the course “Introduction to Logic” at the University of Helsinki for many years, and again in the fall of 2019. In the spring of 2018, I taught (for the second time) the course “Modern philosophy of mathematics”. Currently I am teaching the courses “Introduction to the Philosophy of Science and Technology”, “Theories of Research”, “Introduction to the Philosophy of Computation” and “Modelling for Policy”. I can also teach epistemology, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and many other subjects on both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Other

I live in Aachen, Germany.

I am quite passionate about many things in life. I love literature, cinema and music. Good food and drink is an important hedonistic aspect of my life. I love fishing and spending time in nature, but mostly I am happy to enjoy the city life. I have a passion for football, both as a player and a spectator. In fact I have recently published a book about the football World Cup (so far available only in Finnish): https://vastapaino.fi/sivu/tuote/jalkapallon-mm-kisojen-suurimmat-ottelut/4191175

If you can read Finnish, check out also my new book about Germany and football:
